China releases hydrogen energy development report:production and consumption ranking 1st in world
The National Energy Administration of China held a press conference on April 28. Xu Jilin, Deputy Director of the Department of Energy Conservation and Science, Technology and Equipment, introduced the China Hydrogen Energy Development Report 2025 (中国氢能发展报告(2025))which was released recently.
According to the report, China's annual hydrogen production and consumption scale exceeds 36.5 million tons, ranking first in the world. By the end of 2024, China had built a renewable energy electrolysis water hydrogen production capacity of over 120,000 tons per year, more than 540 hydrogen refueling stations, and promoted approximately 24,000 fuel cell vehicles.
In 2024, China continued to improve the policy measures for the hydrogen energy industry, promoted innovation in hydrogen energy technology and equipment, and accelerated the promotion and application of hydrogen energy in the fields of energy, transportation, and industry.
As a cutting-edge emerging industry, hydrogen energy was included in the "Government Work Report", and the "Energy Law of the People's Republic of China" stipulates that "actively and orderly promote the development and utilization of hydrogen energy to promote the high-quality development of the hydrogen energy industry."
The content of the Report mainly includes three parts: the development of hydrogen energy in China and the world in 2024, the development prospects of China's hydrogen energy industry in 2025, and a list of major events.
In the part of the situation in 2024, the report systematically summarizes the development situation of hydrogen energy in China and the world in 2024 from six aspects: policy release, market scale, price level, innovative applications, international cooperation, and standard certification.
In the part of prospects for 2025, relevant prospects are put forward from five aspects, including strengthening policy coordination, promoting core technology research, improving the public service system, advancing the pilot work of hydrogen energy, and exploring the international market.
According to the report, by the end of 2024, the cumulative installed capacity of global renewable energy hydrogen production projects exceeded 250,000 tons per year. China accounted for more than 50% of the total, and has gradually become a leading country in the development of global renewable energy hydrogen production and related industries.
